Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing
The region offers two wonderful cross-country skiing and snowshoeing options.
The Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, located 14 miles south of the Herbert Grand Hotel, features a 60-mile network of well-groomed cross-country ski trails that run through the Maine woods with views of the Bigelow mountain range. Snowshoers can access the skate lane on all 60 miles of cross-country ski trails or make use of the 18 miles of "snowshoe only" trails. Avid snowshoers are encouraged to take the "dead leg challenge," a 4-mile climb to the summit of Burnt Mountain from the East Trail of Sugarloaf Mountain. Panaoramic views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Katahdin, Baxter State Park and Mount Washington in New Hampshire await those who successfully complete the trek. The Sugarloaf Outdoor Center offers equipment rentals, private coaches and guided safaris but charges a fee for use of the trails and equipment.
The second cross-country skiing and snowshoeing option near the Herbert Grand Hotel is the Maine Huts and Trails network of 80 miles of groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. The trails are a mere ten-minute drive from the Herbert Grand Hotel and traverse a wide variety of terrain and offer an amazing experience in the Maine wilderness. Parking and use of the trails are free.
