Hiking the Western Mountains of Maine
The Herbert Grand Hotel is perfectly located near the Maine Huts and Trails system, the Appalachian Trail and multiple 4,000 footers, so-called because their summits exceed 4,000 feet.
Maine Huts and Trails is a system of 45 miles of hiking trails featuring winding switchbacks, sandy paths along mountain streams, natural bridges and incredible views. The trail head is a ten-minute drive from the Herbert Grand Hotel. Additionally, Crocker Mountain and South Crocker Mountain, part of the Appalachian Trail, are located approximately twenty-minutes from the Herbert Grand Hotel. Each of these mountains feature peaks of more than 4,000 feet (Crocker Mountain is 4,228 feet and South Crocker Mountain is 4,050 feet). Also, near the Herbert Grand Hotel is the 10,000 acre Bigelow Mountains Preserve which features the 4,090 foot Avery Peak and the 4,145 foot West Peak with 360 degree views of Flagstaff Lake. The Appalachian Trail traverses the Bigelow Mountains.
